As a medical provider I was really resistant to this type of diet. Every bit a person who struggles with obesity and nutrient addiction I decided to attempt this anyway. It has changed my life.     A fantastic, thorough, dense yet approachable overview to ketosis. It'southward written by doctors for doctors to tell their patients how to go very depression carb, so information technology can exist biomed oriented at times (as in naming many acronyms I haven't heard of), simply the data is invaluable.

    I have been "paleo" / low carb for 5 years, but never aimed to go into ketosis. I had many questions - how is athletic performance effected? What are the all-time fat sources for ketosis? Is all that brute fat *really* what I should be eating? How practice specific organs react to running primarily on fat?

    This book answers all of those questions and more. I've read "Wheat Belly" and "Why We Get Fat", which were bully intros into low carb eating and avoiding grains, simply this book is specifically well-nigh ketosis. The other books do a better job of explaining why fat is actually salubrious, only Art & Science covers the basics. Mayhap two chapters in I decided to go full keto as a lifestyle.

    The book covers all sorts of topics and cites countless studies along the mode. Volek and Phinney have been performing their own patient studies for decades, so they are more than than qualified to write about the subject. They also fully acknowledge their shortcomings (and those of diet in general) like how inflammation is very complicated and non fully understood and activated past many dissimilar things.

    At that place are probably other good keto resources out there, but the combined experience of the authors leaves no keto stone uncovered. I would arrive required reading for anyone looking to change their lifestyle to high fatty, low carb.

      The almost complete, denoting, assessment of the medical literature regarding depression-sugar diets I take ever read. Drs. Phinney and Volek are two of the world experts on the topic having done a vast majority of the research to date. The book not but explains the physiology and value of depression carb diets, but also clearly shows the flaws in research that have led to the misconception that fat is bad for yous and high carb diets are not.

      I have known Dr. Phinney personally for many years and always turn to him when I need help agreement what to do to help my patients.

      If you lot desire to know why we have an obesity epidemic in the United States and what to do near, this book is a must read.

        just plant this book after trying a two week period on the keto diet. afterwards reading half the book i realize that some of the suffering with regards to keto-adaptation does have natural causes and straightforward remedies. will effort once more when i get home from a current trip. this is really heady the stuff which is happening in the body. also i honey the tone and the language in the book. if y'all are trying keto right now brand sure to read chapter 18...

        ***Now I've been on the diet for 3 months and Im rereading the book and taking notes. Have been looking around for information but this book in combination with some podcasts from/with Dominic D'Dagostino have been the most helpful. Thanks to the book and the tips in information technology Im now enjoying a much more stable metabolic life. Im withal learning nigh foods and timing but equally they say in the book: Each private is unlike and has to find what works for them. That is the "Art" of depression carb living. For a reader who has the bailiwick and interest and patience to movement beyond the ordinary way of eating - this is a golden mine. Im grateful to accept found among all the "noise" out at that place.

          This book turned my years' learning at HSPH upside-down, along with the cherished Food Pyramid. Information technology is well-written in a semi-scholarly semi-self-assist fashion but without the usual nauseating advocacy through anecdotes. The main points are made through peer-reviewed published research. I tin can't judge its scientific merits (non existence an expert in this field) nor know how its principle would utilise to my individual situation, simply I applaud its clear and concise education on various metabolic issues. I am even so digesting its diametrically dissimilar decision from the governmental sponsored main-stream dietary guideline. This book needs to exist reviewed next year. Notes May 2014.

          This is the third (and probably the last) book I volition read on keto adaptation. When I learned that research is pointing to chronic high glucose equally the source of things like dementia, alzheimers, cancer, diabetes, center disease, etc. I became very interested in the ketogenic way of life, i.e., converting your brain from being a "carbohydrate burner" to beingness a "fat burner." The authors of this book have washed studies on the keto style of life and are very knowledgable almost its implementation. The first function of the book was the all-time for me.

          Reading this volume may literally save your life. It explains why low carb diets are skillful for general wellness, not just weight loss.

            Next to my Bible, the most important book I take. Refer back to it several times a week. If y'all're trying to be healthy, y'all MUST have this book!

            This book is a starting signal for about people, merely I found some of what Volek focused on to exist a bit out of line with some of the academic literature I read concurrently. Take, for case, these two studies in Nature.

            The first says the carbohydrate-insulin model as likewise simplistic, and the 2d says in that location is no evidence of increased metabolic activity on the ketogenic nutrition.

            It's quite clear to me the main benefits of the ketogenic nutrition are that, like virtually diets, it encourages a caloric arrears. That's the most crucial footstep and the step that all dieting plans when you look at dieting every bit a cantankerous-cut, work most of the time.

              Excellent read

              I've chosen to give this book 5 solid stars because of the quality and corporeality of information presented. Off-white warning, there is a lot of medical and scientific terms. It's easily decipherable with a basic understanding of medical terminology.

              That said, I learned a lot more than nearly biological markers and feel my understanding of nutritional ketosis has improved, even later endless hours of research I've done on my ain.

              I'd recommend this volume to people who are interested in the science behind low carb diets and understand the differences betwixt nutritional ketosis and ketoacidosis. This isn't a volume aimed at sharing recipes; if that's what y'all're after, I strongly suggest looking elsewhere.
